Why am I researching the surname Louisiana? Because this is my married name as I am a Hudson whose paternal family is in Canada from Ireland and whose maternal family came to the Dakota's with a Germanic background; Prussia, Bessarabia, Brandenburg. So I have very different quests going on to preserve my family history. Note to mention that my childrens father (first marriage) of Linford is really an adopted name of his father who was born as a Neff (another quest).
Stories have it that the Louisiana's decended from King Louis of France (perhaps Louis XIV or XV) and came to North America by way of Italy. So I am on a quest to research the family name of Louisiana.
I am stuck on finding the parents of John Louisiana b. 1846 St Louis MO, d. 1900 Montrose MN.
I have his will, obituary, newspaper articles, he was a private in the E-Eighth Infantry during the civil war, member of Montrose G.A.R post, found marriage and witnesses, took photos at the Kridler Cemetary, have land records in Marysville, sister Mary Kuhl was listed in the Delano Eagle obituary, probate record. All these documents I know where he lived, when, who he married and his children, where and when he was born and died and where he is buried. But no parents information???? So far I have 17 versions for the name Louisiana and some were even in published works right here in MN where they settled in the 1860's. (Census records are another roadbloack mentioned below).
A Louisiana relative has stated: his parents are Charles Louisiana born 1819 in Italy and Marie Josephine Meyerdirks born 1825 Germany with a christening record in a Methodist church in St Louis at age 19. And that there are also christening records at the "Old Cathedral" in St Louis for the children. It was also suspected that Charles Louisiana came from the area Liguria, Italy and that he went to the gold fields in California after coming to Missouri.
- so I'm stuck and cannot find an "Old Cathedral" in St Louis MO as of yet.
- I found 2 sets of 1850 census records in St Louis, MO one for Ward 2 and another for Ward 3. Ward 2 shows Charles & Ann with children John & Sarah. Ward 3 shows Charles & Mary with children John & Sarah. The children having the same birth year, the father having the same profession and place of birth the same for each person. (perhaps the traditional Italian naming custom in place here)
- I do see that there is a region named Liguria in northern Italy which is all ocean front. And there are relatives who were in Florida and Missouri in the mid 1800's.
Another person has included the middle name of Simon for John Louisiana. But I have not come across this and there were no records attached. Same with photos people attach but do not indicate where they came from or if they were marked on the back etc.
